I am considering getting a Varidesk to improve my general well being since I work at a desk all day, 45 hours a week. I looked into other options, but I really like the fact that I can switch from sitting to standing very easily.
The only thing holding me back is the $375 price tag, $325 for the desk and $50 for shipping. I plan on working for another 3 to 5 years, so it will get use.
I am going to ask my boss if the company will pay for it, but I doubt they will.
So, do I pay for a very expensive luxury item that might improve my health, or do I suck it up and save the cash?

My husband started working for himself a while back and bought a used Ikea Jerker desk configured to stand up height. He uses it with a drafting stool, so he can sit or stand. Might be a cheaper option for you.

I love them.
One thing you could do would be to "prove it" before you spend the money. Find a box and plop your monitor on it, find another box and use it for your keyboard/mouse. If you try it for 2 weeks and like it, that's an easier sell since you are already doing it. I used a copy paper box. It doesn't have to be fancy.

I switched to standing desk recently and love it- will never go back... Is there anything wrong with your current set up that would help you make the argument for a replacement?

My current setup only allows for sitting. I have thought about just using a box or platform, but I really don't think I can stand 100% of the time. I need something that will easily transition from sitting to standing and back. Since I don't own any of the office furniture, I can't attach anything to the top of the desk or to the walls.

My desk is in good condition, so no, I don't think I can make an argument for a replacement. Also, due to the size of our offices, we have a standard desk for all engineers.

A couple folks in my office already got Varidesks and mine is now on order. I think it is going to do wonders for my low back pain based on their experiences.
FWIW, our employer is footing the bill for them. As long as you're not in the habit of making expensive office furniture requests, you might be surprised how amenable your boss is to making you more comfortable and productive at your desk!

We ordered one for my husband that got delivered yesterday. He hemmed and hawed for months about the price tag since his work was not willing to pay for them. He's been having intermittent neck and back pain from sitting so much so I think in the long run the purchase is worth it. In that sense, we justified the cost as pertaining to his health, the same way you would buying a bike or exercise costs. I wouldn't consider it a luxury item in the classic sense.

I have one and can honestly say it has helped my back immeasurably. Hopefully your employer will cover it, but if not there are homemade hacks to create one on instructables. I would definitely hack one if my employer didn't pick up the tab. Maybe after they see how you built one they will change their mind.
