Mustachian Therapy?
« on: December 02, 2013, 10:21:45 AM »
Any mustachians out there go to therapy (i.e. for mental health, not physical therapy) or have found effective, low-cost replacements for therapy?

I value therapy, and go weekly to individual therapy, but I am spending a fairly large sum each month out of pocket. My insurance covers it, but I have a fairly high deductible plan, and by the time I reach the deductible, the insurance no longer covers it due to a yearly limit on the number of sessions.

Looking at my expenses, this one would be probably the lowest hanging fruit - providing the greatest financial benefit to cutting it. I could cut it out entirely, saving a few hundred a month, but I feel I would be missing the benefits that it gives me (insight, etc.) I don't have any diagnosed mental issues, but I feel that therapy provides a benefit with clarifying my feelings on relationships, self-image, and helps me with decision making.

Any suggestions for cutting back or replacing this? Group therapy has been suggested. I don't think I am likely to qualify for sliding scale individual therapy. Have you replaced therapy with an individual practice of meditation/introspection?

Thanks!

We moved from weekly to fortnightly therapy sessions. Obviously that saved us 50%, but still kept the insight, etc. flowing.

Do you have an option for a healthcare savings account? Another option, if you want to keep going, is to switch to biweekly or some other less-than-weekly frequency. If you're not super attached to the person you're seeing, then maybe you could find a social work student who'd be willing to work out a barter or something like that (sounds weird, but my MIL offered discount sessions for trade when she was in school).

But it kind of sounds like you don't really need it. If you don't have any significant mental health issues that you're managing, why do you think you need therapy specifically for "clarifying [your] feelings on relationships, self-image, and helps me with decision making"? I do this with my friends over beers, and my friends on online forums. I mean, I'm all for therapy if it's something you need, but the way you've framed this makes it seem like you do it out of habit. Which is a pretty expensive habit.

Some suggestions along the lines of meditation/introspection:

Meditation
Yoga
Tai chi
Gardening
Martial arts
Running

I go hunting/hiking/camping fishing, supplemented by bourbon.  Seems to work and fairly low cost as long as I don't buy too much single barrel bourbons.
