To file an insurance claim or not.
« on: April 22, 2014, 03:52:24 PM »
We got whacked by a fast moving hail storm a week ago.  Unfortunately both of my best vehicles were dented up a bit in multiple places.  Since the game plan is to keep these paid for vehicles for the next decade, I went to the insurance company and filed a claim.  The estimates that came back were unexpected- $1400 and $2300.  So I proceeded to get them both fixed as the deductible was manageable. I was told that hail as an event is not an incident that can be charged back via higher premium to individuals- we all pay for it from our particular "pool".
Now I get a visit from a regional roofing company.  They inspect the house and bring down pictures from the roof of hail damage to my roof and soft metals.  I am trying to decide if I want to claim this as well.
Roof is 14 years old, we live with severe weather and I am a good customer of the insurance company.  My only other claim in a dozen years was for a car fire that totaled one of my vehicles.  The roofing guy makes the point that you can see the visible dings to the shingles, but you can't see the fractures in the shingle itself- until the next big blow event.  Makes sense, with the understanding that he is trying to sell a particular outcome.
So, what would you do?  We are good long time customers with this company and I know for a fact they aren't the cheapest deal I could find if I didn't like them.  File the claim or wait for the next big blow?

MODS- I just noticed another thread involving hail damage- please feel free to merge in there if that makes for a cleaner thread.

Claim it and replace it. Most roofs are only 20-year rated anyway. The impact damage might not look like much, but will lead to premature water intrusion.

First.. Yes, sadly I used to work in insurance..

And sadly, your premium will be going up either way, though slightly more if you file a claim, but worth it to file a claim.

Insurance is done by groupings (streets, blocks, subdivisions, cities, metros) if anyone on your street/block... has a claim, your area goes up in risk, possibly only fractions of a penny, the more claims, the larger the claims, the higher the increase.  All of the insurance companies breakdown the areas slightly different but use the same general idea.  (It is possible for the people across the street to fall into a different grouping, think school districts).

You should have your insurance company come out and do an inspection.  They will give you a dollar amount offer if the damages are bad enough.  If they say only $1000, gladly thank them and decline to proceed with the claim (your roof is not that bad).  Inspections and starting claims do not raise your rates. If they offer you $3-6k.  Replace it, your premium will go up but it will take years for it to equal $3-6k (if ever).
