tips, thoughts, helpful advice on visiting Germany (Munich)
« on: January 14, 2025, 12:06:47 PM »
Here we are planning our summer trip abroad in probably mid-July. We are based in the US and would like to visit Munich for about a week and a half. Me, my wife and 3 teenagers.

Looking at areas just outside of Munich that might be slightly more quiet/cheaper than the city itself but have excellent public transit as we will not be renting a car.

We prefer a house/condo. I Found a place (airbnb) in Karlsfeld that looks like it would be nice. Would appreciate any locals or those of you really familiar with this region to chime in.

We enjoy walkable/bikeable areas and just generally like to explore, old architecture, castles, public markets and yes, of course beer gardens...(I am of German descent after all) ;-)

Thanks,
Matt

My Grandma (Oma) lived in Dachau and I spend about 5 months living there with her years ago a couple of years after I FIREd as well as when I was about 14. Karlsfeld was on my route when I went to Munich via train or bike and I remember it was a nice town. There seems to be many things going on there and there were nice off road bike paths around to many places so it was a great place to ride. It might be different now but back then I liked it. My old Oma was in her upper 80s then and still took long bike rides almost daily from Dachau to Karlsfeld thru a forest path.   In Dachau there is a small castle (really a big estate) and of course the concentration camp worth visiting. Plus it is (was) a scenic small town and an easy day trip to Munich and surrounding areas.
