I met a little ray of hope....
My niece came up to me and asked me what I can tell her about the RESP (Registered Educational Savings Plan - Canadian) so that she can convince her dad to get her one because she wanted to put her own savings in there to take advantage of the government grants to pay for her dream....
She told me Plan A was music. Plan B was veterinary studies and Plan C was Psychology... She's 13...
Best conversation of the day!

Wow, that's a pretty adult thing to know about at age 13. I don't know what I was doing at 13, but it sure wasn't looking up savings plans.
I went with my brother to an amusement park today and I was in charge of the older, 10-14ish old niece and nephew. I peeked at my phone in line and my niece asks "what kind of phone do you have?" I say "Nexus 5"...and she replies "Yeah my mom and dad have that...I just have a Nexus 4. I'm so poor." I asked why having a Nexus 4 makes you "poor," and she said that if you didn't have the latest "thing," then you're obviously poor because everybody wants it, but you obviously can't afford it.
We got into a little conversation about how people who don't always have the newest thing, actually are the richer ones, by simply saying that "Those people still have the money that other people spent on a phone" and we joked about how you couldn't possibly go from "cool with the latest phone" to "loser with an old model" in one day, when a new model is released.
Here's hoping something stuck in their head :)

I was thinking of cancelling my cell phone plan all together.

My oldest (8) understands that we have money we don't spend. At first I told her we are saving up for a trip (true) but now she can understand that we're saving up for both of us not to work anymore.
