Temporary Health Insurance Solution?
« on: July 08, 2013, 08:27:59 PM »
Can anyone recommend a company that could provide inexpensive health insurance coverage for about a month?

Backstory: I lost my health insurance, which I got through my parent's employer, in June. I qualify for subsidized insurance at the university I work and attend. However, that insurance works on a school-year cycle and the earliest it'll kick in for me is August. COBRA would be like $500, so it's not preferable. I think I let the deadline for getting COBRA pass anyway.

Long story short, I need health insurance for 3-4 weeks. I don't care if it's high deductible or emergency-only, I just don't want to take the chance that I'll get hit by a truck and end up massively in debt.  Any recommendations? Is it even possible to get coverage that short?

We got catastrophic for a month between jobs (well, waiting for insurance to kick in) when we made our move to the country. It was from Blue Cross and was a couple hundred dollars for the two of us. Hospitialization only, a fairly high deductible.

Check Google for "catastrophic"insurance, and it is (or was) possible to get it from one of the big mainstream companies.

Read up on COBRA really carefully. I believe there is a 60 day "window" to sign up for it. If you make it to day 58 and catastrophe strikes, you can still sign up. So if you lost your insurance sometime in June, you should still be able to sign up for COBRA in August if the worst occurs. Good luck!

Yes, it is possible to get insurance for one month.  Go to ehealthinsurance.com and they have a tab at the top of their homepage for Temporary Insurance and it will give you a quote.  As always...read the fine print of each plan so you know exactly what you are purchasing. I've had to do it before and have no complaints and they approved my application quickly.

I believe this to be the case too,. I have done this in the past when switching jobs.
