Title: Teaching an adult to bike
Post by: VeganStasher on June 14, 2013, 09:20:22 AM
I need some advice. I love riding a bike, it makes me feel young, and free, and it is so convenient and I get exercise, etc., etc. But my husband had a very underprivileged childhood in which his father got cancer when he was five, and there was no time or resources for anyone to teach him to ride a bike.  As a result, I hardly ever ride, because my work is too far to bike (I carpool with 3 coworkers), and for most other places I am going, I am with my husband. I have tried to teach him myself, but he feels embarrassed to even try, and hates talking about it when others are around. It makes him sad to even think about, but I think and he agrees that if he did learn it would be really triumphant, empowering, even healing. Anyone have advice on learning to bike as an adult who has NEVER ridden (so, "you never really forget how" doesn't help us)?

I saw an article about a learn-to-ride class for adults in NYC. If you can find something like that, it might be easier to learn with other adults who also don't know how to ride.

Here's an article

Balance bikes (no pedals) are popular with kids who are learning, and my 4yo picked it up immediately. If you lower the bike seat and remove the pedals, your husband could probably do the same.
