New Job Opportunity
« on: April 20, 2019, 02:50:32 PM »
Hello everyone. I recently had a new job opportunity present itself and I'd love some opinions. The entire process from first message to verbal offer took approximately a week, so it's been a bit of a whirlwind.

I'll post a summary of both my current and the new position. Thanks in advance!

Current position
  • Database Developer doing mainly data integration and reporting
  • I've only been there about a year - This is one of my main concerns. I don't want to leave my coworkers hanging
  • Related to the above, I was just assigned a new project doing more senior level application design work
  • The work is great as are my coworkers
  • What I've learned in this position has set me up very well for the new one
  • Small company - Under 150
  • Pay is great
  • Benefits and vacation are good

New Position
  • Data Engineer/Consultant doing data migration and advising clients
  • One of the best software companies in my area
  • Medium sized company - Over 2000
  • 11% pay bump
  • Benefits and vacation are slightly better
  • Opportunity to work remote in the future - This is a big deal as my wife is graduation from her doctoral program soon and we're not sure where she'll find a job
  • Childcare onsite for future mini mustaches
  • I've had my eye on this company and have applied and gotten close in the past. This time they contacted me

For context I'm 30 and I've been in various IT roles throughout my career, but have stuck with database related work for the last 5 years or so.

I look forward to the comments!

What's the draw for this new opportunity?  It doesn't look like you hate your current job, and with only an 11% increase (that your current company would probably match) it doesn't look like it's the money either.  You said you've had your eye on this new company for a while - why?  I'd be hesitant to leave a good thing for an unknown, and a new company is always an unknown.  Is there a possibility of remote work with your current company?  I'd ask, at a minimum.  When I look at your description of your current position it looks like you're in a great job and I'd be reluctant to change because what you describe sounds really good and pretty rare.

Sounds like a plus, but I suspect either employer will pay more than 11% if needed. Maybe hold out for more $ before moving? Or as poster above says, ask current employer about work from home flexlbility over time?

Be fair and honest with both parties - maintain good relations if possible, remain respect-worthy regardless.

Will defer to more knowledgeable posters. Good luck in either case.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
