Switching ISP from Comcast to AT&T to save $?
« on: September 09, 2015, 12:00:03 PM »
Hi folks,

During the constant reviews of our monthly expenses, my wife and I always seem to experience the most outrage at our Comcast Internet bill. It's a never-ending game to try and keep it from rising too high. We were at $70/mo for a while there, which was already $8 higher than when we signed up two years ago, and I just signed in to my account to find that our next bill will be $95! That seems nutso to me.

When I called Comcast threatening to discontinue service, the best thing they could offer me was a $20 off coupon or something for a couple of months, and a vague indication that there might be other promotional rates available if I called back in December.

If we switched to AT&T U-Verse for Internet, it looks like it would be $45 for the fastest package, over 50% lower than our current bill. But is it worth the hassle of switching ISPs? Is U-Verse reliable? I don't know. I'd really appreciate opinions from anyone with experience switching ISPs, and specifically switching from Comcast to AT&T.

Thanks!

Call them back and say you'll switch unless you can match AT&T's price. See if they match it for you

I switched from Verizon to Comcast several years ago, then switched back after 2 years or so (when I again qualified for the "new customer" rates). I hated Comcast - but it is the only alternative here. The next go-around w/ Verizon I spent probably 10 hours total on the phone w/ them and eventually got transferred to a special customer service lady who gave me the online (much lower - new customer) rate to retain my business. Most recently when I cancelled cable and phone (kept internet) I talked to them for about 1 hour, said that Comcast had lower rates, could I speak w/ someone who could offer me a better rate, etc. and got them to knock about $15 off the monthly cost.

I would say - try to get them to drop the cost first. If they won't budge, then yeah - it is worth $600 of so savings per year to deal w/ the hassle of changing providers.

If the Comcast account is in your name, cancel it and then have your wife sign up and ask for the "12 month promotional rate."  In a year, switch again.  The promotional rate is usually about half.

Be prepared for some hassle, but definitely get your bill dropped, either by negotiating it down or by switching. The hourly rate (after taxes too!) is great if it saves you $600.

I would switch away from Comcast even if it cost me more money!

How fast is the fastest package?  What do you mainly use your internet service for?  The fastest package might be overkill.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
