I heard on NPR this past weekend that most people that are millionairs live inconspiculously frugal and that most people that appear to live like millionairs are deep in debt.
I've got roughly $500K in assets and live on about $20K/yr.
So, yeah, I believe.

I have a friend who I suspect lives like the exact estimation .. I hate him (in an ideal way). ;p

Just now a few neighbors were chatting and I joined them. One said she had gotten her taxes done. Another volunteered that she goes to H and R Block and her boyfriend doesn't even have to do taxes. I said I hadn't even started on mine yet.

One of them said something about millionaires like you, and I didn't know what to say. I just pretended to be terribly embarrassed and apologized. All obviously in fun. Everyone laughed and the conversation went on to other things. Now I wonder if they know. I sure don't dress, act, or talk like what one would imagine.

They know I have a horse, and I drive a nice but not fancy car. But I live in 600sq feet and wear old jeans most of the time.

Not that I want to subvert this whole stealth wealth thing, but are there any fairly reliable "tells" that you can use to spot a millionaire at the Goodwill store?

Teeth are all present, even in an older person. In young people: perfectly straight white teeth, or adult braces. When I first moved to a wealthy area, I was really surprised by how many older people still have real teeth.

Tattoos, if present, appear professionally done and artistic (not DIY/ prison jobs), are not excessively faded, and do not exceed the number of teeth.

Nice teeth doesn't mean they have money, it just means they spent money on their teeth, not that they don't have a negative net worth.

Where I live, thrifting has become pretty socially acceptable among professional working women, but there's no way to distinguish which lawyer in the thrift shop has a million saved.

People in California never refi their homes to pay off consumer debt???

How does home ownership indicate anything about someone's level of wealth? The poorest couple I know own a million dollar home that they've used as a bank machine.

oh, absolutely  almost everyone pulls money out of their houses here. They just assume you didn't since they are trying to keep up with you!

Came across an article a couple years ago about "Resting poor face" which says that with much better accuracy than chance, people can tell is someone is rich or not at a glance.

The idea being along the lines of the rich have considerably less stress in their lives, and this translates into a hundred very subtle changes in appearance, confidence, swagger etc. Things that can only be picked up subconsciously, but which are there none the less.

I will play a game by going to plenty of fish and view the photos (women) that pop up for each person, and guess before I confirm in their profile:

- Education level

- Children or no children

- Smoker or non-smoker

I'm startled by how many times I get all three correct.  There is something very powerful afoot in our minds, for the subtle as it relates to other humans.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
