Suggestions on where to find a "non owner" Automobile Liability Policy?

Hi Mustachians,

I am looking for a non-owner auto policy and not happy with what I have found:  $500,000 Liability (each person/each accident) for $402 per 6 months.  This makes my "break even" versus the car rental counter as around 20 day rentals over 6 months (figuring $17 per day, plus tax).  This is through an agency I've worked with in the past.

Whenever I've done web searches for non-owner auto policies, I get little to nothing.  While my license is impeccably clean, I have no recent history of insuring an auto (maybe that's why the rate is so high...?).  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

If you qualify, USAA has inexpensive non-owners auto insurance. I was paying $12 something per month for 2 people.

Is this for the purpose of renting a car? The rental company will offer insurance.

I don't own a car and I don't have a policy. It depends on how long you rent for, but for ~1 week, it's not a huge increase per day. The last time I went to visit my mom for a few days as part of a work trip, the fee was too high, so I took a Lyft instead. Still cheaper than an auto policy I would never use otherwise.

Another option would be a rideshare membership if you need to rent more frequently - those also include insurance in the rates.

So figure out how often you actually need a rental car and compare the prices to other means of transport.

I looked into this too because i have a car i only use in the summer (i live 1000 miles from where it's stored) and often rent cars the rest of the year. In the end, i gave up and just got a policy on my summer car for $13/month through Liberty Mutual.

Of course, if you don't have a car at all, then you'll have a harder time with this arrangement. Maybe you can insure yourself on another family member's car?

It usually ends up being $17 per day PLUS tax in the New York City area...which is where I will be doing a lot of renting.  Yes, I can uber as well, but I am finding ubering is FAR FROM cheap for longer distances...

I think my daughter has a non-owner policy through Geico, but I don't know what it costs. You might have to call rather than searching online.
