No 401(k) at new company ... where else should I invest?
« on: May 06, 2014, 09:55:26 AM »
My 7-week funemployment period is nearly over. I left a large global corporation in mid-March with great benefits and now switching gears completely to join a small startup company. They have an equity-share program, which could be worth something in a few years, but no 401(k) ... yet.

I was able to put in about 5k this year into my old 401k before I got laid off. Now, I am just DCA'ing into a Vanguard tax-deductible IRA ($5,500 total by end of the year).

My inclination at this point is to continue to purchase taxable ETFs or index funds (better than not investing at all, despite its tax disadvantages) and perhaps increase contributions to my kid's 529 plan, of which are tax deductible at the state level.

Any other suggestions to reduce my tax liability for 2014? It's really too bad there is a limit on IRA contributions.

Thanks!

HSA's. 529's. Get a second job with a 401k. Start your own side business and use your own self employment 401k. Tax Exempt government bonds.

Each option has its own pros and cons.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
