Steel Cut Oats

I've been getting steel cut oats in 50lb bags from Amazon for $50. Today I went to buy, and the price has doubled to $110. Anyone know where I can buy oats in bulk at a better price than Amazon?

I'm sorry, I don't know why the price increased so dramatically! Do you live near Winco? They carry them but I don't know the price, offhand. You could try Azure Standard as well.

If you have a Sprouts near you, call up and talk to the bulk department - they'll order you a bag (30 or 50 pounds) and give you 10% off the regular price for buying in bulk. They will do this with anything in their bulk section (even if it's not normally sold in your particular store).

I think their normal cost for steel cut oats is 99 cents/pound? If I'm right, that should be $45 per 50 pound bag.

Bob's Red Mill is a great source, but they charge a lot for shipping, so I prefer ordering through Sprouts.

What is the difference between groats and steel cut oats?

Groats are the whole grain, and steel cut are diced up groats (and not rolled).

YES! I buy these and make granola for my kids.    It's cheap, super easy and I know whats in it.

I fill a bowl with enough to cover a cookie sheet and put in a cup of olive oil, half a cup or so of honey, and a little brown sugar and vanilla.

Then just bake at 320 for 20 mins or so.

I can't believe the community's help. All suggestions very helpful. I ended up buying the 50 pound bag of groats that was recommended by MsW.

BTW, I make mine by using the Instapot. One cup of oats to (I think)~3 cups water. With the Instapot, it's an electric pressure cooker with a stainless steel liner that's easy to clean. Once placed the oats and water, I press the "Porridge" button which when it comes up to pressure takes 20 minutes to cook. When finished it goes to the "keep warm" cycle. After walking dogs come home to cooked oatmeal, with blueberries, strawberries, bananas and nuts.

i 2nd looking around locally for oats in bulk.  i am not 100%, but pretty sure that in my local grocery bulk sections oats are less than $1/lb... IIRC the price is either .69 or .79/lb.

It's a Zojirushi rice cooker. It also uses the Porridge button and makes them flawlessly. I used to use the stove, but it took an hour. That is a waste of 1 hour's worth of natural gas!

I think I'm with Goblinchief on this one. Even OP's "low" price ($1 a pound) seems high, and shipping is the likely culprit.

Up here in expensive Canada, expensive Bulk Barn is selling steel cut oats this week for 89 inexpensive Canadian cents per pound. Buy ten bucks' worth, use the omnipresent $3-off Bulk Barn coupon, and you're talking, um, 53 American cents per pound.
