Negotiating pay after starting a new job???

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to know about negotiating pay after I already stated a new job. What would that look like could it possible cause more headache than it helps.

Here is my back story:

I was offered a position to “clean up an agency”. I accepted based on the offer presented although the amount I asked for was for a different position which was changed during the interview. I didn’t know what it would look like to counter then because I had given a range and it was met. So basically I’ve started and this role is not at all what I expected it is a whole lot more and I am definitely not making what I should and I want to reach out to my boss and owner about discussing my compensation. I know they already value me because I’ve made tremendous change in my nearly a week working here and they already talk about me being the best hire they’ve made in a while. What do you all think about this situation should I just wait it out and continue to be underpaid, should I look for an exit from the company where I will be paid what I deserve or should I discuss it with them?

What is your alternative if you leave this job?  Can you just "go back" to your other job?

If that's the case, I would make sure at least two weeks have gone by and ask to sit down with management and express that "I am enjoying the challenge, making a difference, blah blah blah, however this wasn't exactly what you expected.  Had I known it was this, I would have required X to start".

This next part is incredibly important, you then don't say another word.  Even if it involves an awkward 5 minute pause.  The next person who speaks loses the request. 

See what their response is and go from there.  You'll know VERY quickly if there is more money available to you or you need to go back to your old employer.

Thanks for your response. My old job was heartbroken to see me leave and said if I want to come back I just need to call so I do have that option. I will let the next week past and then try your method and see what they say.

Usually if you left the right way and with the employment market being so tight, a former employer will let you back.  I'd suggest you reach out to them, see how its going, and tell them you're a little uncertain about the move and see what they say.
