Furniture Buying Tips
« on: December 31, 2016, 11:16:57 AM »
We are looking to buy a new living room set.  We don't want to buy the sofa/love seat second hand but would buy the tables from Craigslist.  We previously bought a set from Rooms to Go about 6 years ago and it was total junk.  We want to get something more quality made this time around.  Does anyone have any suggestions of where to go?

The big retailers around here seem to be:
Rooms-to-Go
City Furniture
El Dorado
Haverty's
Macy's
Baer's
American Signature
Ikea
Ethan Allen
Ashley

I would like a comfortable sofa recliner and a loveseat (non-recliner).  Comfort and quality (durability) are the biggest concerns.  We are having our first baby next month(!!!) and I hear leather is easiest to maintain with babies?

Any tips / suggestions?

I wouldn't rule out Craigslist. In the past couple of years I've bought a nice leather couch for $250 (probably well over $5k new), and a couple of Ekornes recliners, $275 for the pair (they start at around $1500 retail).

If you live anywhere near an Amish community, I find their furniture to be fantastic quality, definitely the kind of thing you buy once and keep forever. We stopped at a fair in rural PA one day, and the Amish had a big tent set up with furniture on display. They offered us an amazing kitchen set (table and six chairs) for $1300, which was 50% off the marked price, but only if we took it home that day. It didn't fit in our CR-V, so that was that. However, the quality was so far above anything I've seen in a big box store that I would have gladly paid the original $2600.

My SIL (who thinks cheapest price is always best) just bought a dining room set from Big Bob's - http://www.mybobs.com/

The first time my BIL sat on one of the chairs the front legs snapped off. I'd say they got their money's worth.

I would never buy a couch/recliner second hand, at least ones with a porous covering (as opposed to leather, pleather, vinyl etc..).

Do you know how much bodily fluids have soaked into that 2nd hand couch your buying and what the pathogen status was of the previous users? Before you write me off, I have personally witnessed on many occasion bodily fluids soaking into couches. Can't count how many times the wife and I have had very messy sex on it and young kids having "accidents."

2nd hand chairs and tables, sure; American made, particularly from North Carolina tend to be good quality.

Costco has some decent deals on leather living room sets. Ikea is fine - I have a leather couch by them and it's held up well over the years - but they don't have reclining sofas as far as I know.

Costco, interesting.  Didn't think of that place.

Don't think there's nearly as much made in North Carolina as there used to be....

If you look at Macy's check their sales, also JC Penney. Definitely look for a sale, and also look for any furniture outlet stores.

I bought a leather chair secondhand and it was in beautiful shape from a very clean upscale house.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
