SS Benefit based on day of month application is made?
« on: December 02, 2015, 06:11:48 PM »
My father is disabled and on SSI. One of the stipulations of SSI is that other income streams available to you you must be exercised. He qualifies for "early" Social Security retirement but not SS disability so he is essentially being forced to take his SS. SS has given him a deadline of 12/30 to file his application. His birthday is on the 25th. Should he try to file after the 25th, thereby making himself one month older or does the application date not matter? I've been searching online and I can't seem to find the right search terms to give me good results. I keep getting generic information so I thought I'd ask here in case anyone knows!

His first month of eligibility for the regular SS payment is the first full month that he is age 62.  If he turns 62 on December 25th, his first month of eligibility is January, and the first check will arrive in February.  It does not matter if he applies before or after his birthday, but the SSA folks need time to process the application to get the deposit to arrive timely.

He is already 62, almost 63. So every month delayed is just a tiny bit larger benefit amount. That's why I was wondering if they determine that based on the date he applies. If he applies on December 22nd would they say he's 62 and 5 months vs. December 28th he's 62 and 6 months? Or does it not matter what day of the month he applies?

As previous poster said, the app date isn't relevant.  You tell them the month you want benefits to start within allowable windows backward or forward. I have no knowledge of SSI rules or what they do or don't allow.
