Storage Crate Recommendations?
« on: March 18, 2018, 02:38:47 PM »
Hi,
I like to store stuff in clear plastic Rubbermaid-style storage crates like these. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VSBFGB8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1. They are convenient and easy when it is time to move. Unfortunately, they break down over time. The lids of the crates tend to crack & break with regular use for more than a year or two. Can anyone recommend something similar that will last longer?

We use either traditional Rubbermaid bins (the coloredrubbery ones that are opaque, they last forever) or the clear Sterilite ones with colored lids. They crack more easily, because clear plastic tends not to be plasticized as much.

Do the ones you linked really cost 55$ for two? Or is that an inflated price on Amazon.

I'm surprised they break down after 1-2 years. Most of ourselves are 10+ years old. They mostly so in the closet. They definitely will all break down quickly if used outdoors as they don't have UV additives in the plastic.

The only plastic storage bins I’ve had crack are the ones that I use for recycling, and that’s because they sit outside all winter.

I’ve got storage bins that are 30 years old - I bought them when my kids were little - and they are still in use. I usually buy them at Family Dollar, but now I’m trying to store less stuff so I’m not buying anymore.

Thanks, my bins get some sunlight through the windows. Maybe that is a factor in their short lives. KMart is cheaper for Rubbermaid than Amazon by maybe 10% to 20% or was last time I bought.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
