Fuck You money
« on: January 27, 2017, 07:03:46 PM »
I just received my annual bonus and it was the equivalent of the owners spitting a snot rocket in my face.  I have never been more motivated to accumulate Fuck You money than at this moment.

I have approached my boss about what I expect my base salary to be many times before annual increases,  it is always uncomfortable but also necessary to set the expectations.  Have you ever gone back to negotiate a bonus once it is already paid/announced?

Looking for general advice on the best way to approach this.

I havent but it all depends on how much leverage you have.  If you are a key person and they cannot afford to lose you I would be very clear about the disappointment.

Yes I am key, I have filled into a leadership role in a time of transition.  My base increase was substantial ~17% but the bonus doesn't match that result at all, it's half of what I got last year when I received an 8% raise.  It doesn't compute for me.

I believe everything is negotiable.  But at this point my leverage is extreme I.e. Taking interviews, I don't really want to do that.

I have never worked at a place where the bonuses were expected.  Any time I've ever received a bonus, it was just treated as an unexpected treat.   If it's profit-sharing or an expected negotiable item, why wouldn't that just be included in salary?  I realize many companies do this, but I've never understood it fully -- although I'd be very happy to get a big bonus every year!

One time I had a discussion with my manager about bonus disappointment and ended up getting more.  I think its about the facts and why bonus is lacking ans convincing management.  As long as its not combative I see some merit in at least understanding the rationale.

@bluehouse it's really par for the industry in public accounting - when you research salary information online it says that bonuses become an increasing percentage of compensation as you move up the ranks.

@79 thanks for you insight, I will take the weekend to cool off and then approach owners with my concerns Monday.

You have received a 25% pay raise in the last year?  I have personally witnessed where a bonus is reduced after such a big raise because management felt that the person had already made out far better than the rest of team.  The good thing is the 25% is guaranteed from now on.  However, if you feel this is unfair, go ahead an look for another job. Sometimes it works as leverage, sometimes it doesn't, be prepared for either outcome.
