Early Retirement- Dream vs Reality
« on: March 13, 2015, 02:15:20 PM »
The large majority of the people on this forum dream of the day they can retire.

They dream about all the free time they have to pursue what they "really want to do" rather than go to a job just to get money from it.

I catch myself day dreaming about what it would be like to have all the money, time and health that I wanted to pursue anything that I wanted. I dream about what I'd do differently, how I'd allocate my day and week to get the most happiness out of life, etc.

However, for those who did retire due to having enough passive income to never work again, what is the reality now vs the dream of early retirement you had whilst you were working? Also, do you now look back at the things you are doing now and realize you could have taken these hobbies/interests up whilst still working?

Seems I am always dreaming about having more time and money in the future and sometimes forget to enjoy or make the most of the free time I have now. For example I'm writing this whilst I should be outside in the sun, walking down to the park!

Looks like you are pretty new to the forum, welcome!  You might find some of the answers you seek in the Post-FIRE category!  Looks like they are pretty happy to me.

Personally I've never really held off on anything, I've just done what I could in the time alloted.  I'm looking forward to spending more time on the things I already enjoy.  On a 0-10 scale I plan on going from 2 to 6-8 vs 0-10.

The reality matches the dream pretty closely.  I mostly wanted more unscheduled free time to do more what I wanted all day every day instead of having someone else lay claim to my day from 7 am to 6-7 pm (getting ready for work, commuting, eating lunch at work, commuting home, etc).

We planned to travel much more in early retirement.  In the last 12 months we spent 5 weeks on vacation.  It wore us out (thanks 2 year old son!).  2015 will have less traveling, and we'll hopefully ramp it back up in 2016 with a 1-2 month summer trip somewhere abroad (Oaxaca MX, Andalusia Spain, and Berlin, Germany are current front runners).  The limitation now is due to very young children and not work, although we never could have pulled off 5 weeks in 2014 with my 14 days of vacation per year while working.  So ditching the work habit certainly helped us accomplish something we wanted to do.

The only major project accomplished since retiring was starting a blog.  I always wanted to do something internet-ish for the last decade and this was it.  I started on September 9 after retiring August 26, 2013.  So I didn't waste any time really.  I didn't necessarily plan on starting a blog while working, but I wanted to dabble in something online and blogging caught my eye one weekend.  I started the blog on a whim after a couple days of thinking about it and researching "how to blog".  It's proven a very fun and fulfilling hobby so far!

I don't know what 'reality' is. Therefore I never use the term.

How about:

Some answers can be found in the forums, reddit, etc.

I would also suggest reading this little piece: http://earlyretirementextreme.com/when-form-follows-function.html

It was an interesting transition for me.. that ended with me doing the P.T job that I am doing now.

I will retire from that too.. probably when the wife quits in June next year.. My story in the link below.

The reality for me is very different to the dream. However, I don't think I could have dreamt the reality - it is so good! The dream had me setting up a business. The reality doesn't include that, and given that I love the freedom to do what I want/need to whenever, a business would have been far too restrictive.
