If I were in your position I would prepare my resignation letter then call the manager and give notice over the phone and tell them using all the polite blah-blah. Then at the end of the conversation tell them you will send the resignation letter by email and send it right away when you get off the phone.

This was addressed in “ Ask A Manager”.  And aligns with what @socaso suggests, i.e., call your manager in the phone to resign.

Another option could be to take an unpaid leave of absence, in case you have not considered that and happen to really like your current employer.

Is your company laying people off due to the pandemic? Can't you volunteer to be laid off instead of quitting?

I agree with this, it might save someone else's job and if you really wanted to then you could collect unemployment. However if you want to resign then as the others have said, call and speak to him then follow up with the 'official' e-mail

I’d add: if you really do want to consider going back there, you might offer an extended handover or training period so the company isn’t stuck. You don’t have to of course, but that would signal that there are no hard feelings, you just need to focus on your family at this time.

When I quit my tech megacorp job in 2019, I had to give my notice via Slack and video conference since my manager worked in a difference city - this was a very common situation in that company.

The actual process of resigning was not especially difficult except that my manager hardly ever looked at his email. I had to message him on Slack to get him to check out the email I sent him :-)

I've quit both my last two jobs via video chats, since both times my manager was not in the same state (or country, in one case).

I just did this recently for another job. I set up a video call but that was the norm for my department meetings. If it weren't I would set up a phone call. Then give the news and say you'll follow up later that day with an email so they can give that to HR.
