Food Plating and Presentation
« on: August 17, 2016, 11:35:44 AM »
Hey All!

Does anyone know of a resource to learn more about food plating and/or re-creating some of the fancy dishes you would get at an upscale restaurant?

As a semi-foodie, I was enjoying reading the thread over in the "Antimustachian" forum regarding expensive meals ( http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/antimustachian-wall-of-shame-and-comedy/forummm-eats-a-$230-meal/ ). Most of my hobbies I have taken up as a way to save money, and cooking is one of those.  As I've grown in my cooking - I have noticed that making impressive / beautiful dishes (a feast for the eyes) is one of the BIG places where an upscale restaurant will differentiate themselves.  In addition - this is a topic that most cook books / cooking shows / cooking classes either *skim over* or leave out.

I've done some youtube searching and have a couple books - but was looking for some more thoughts and ideas.  Bonus points if there is practicality involved - i.e. simple plate designs with sauces from common household ingredients - as opposed to a reduced rasberry puree that's strained (etc.).

I bought little ramekins from a thrift store. They are an attractive way to set out crackers for the soup, salsa for the home made tacos, and berries when they are in season.

Nice idea -  I haven't used my ramekins enough!

I got this ring mold / stacking kit  from Amazon a while ago for some fun ideas - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NVTB5MO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
