Should I leave my Job?
« on: July 12, 2015, 05:54:40 PM »
Hi,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma with my job.

I spent my early 20's trying to figure out what industry I wanted to work in. A couple of years ago, after doing a 6 month fixed term contract with my current company a two year graduate/cadetship role came up which I completed 3 months ago. They basically teach you all about the particular arm of the company (in my case logistics/supply chain). I spent 1-2 months in each smaller department within this role and learnt a lot about skills, people management, systems, project management, etc. It was the most enjoyable role I've ever done.

However, when the role was coming to a conclusion, I was hoping to work in our main supply chain warehouse but instead I've ended up with the only role going which is a dead end data entry role within the depressing head office, where I have a little cubicle and just input numbers and try to put up with my work colleagues who I cannot stand.

I feel a little bit shafted to be honest that I've got quite a lot of skills and potential to really add value but I feel I'm being wasted in this current role.

I'm in the situation that I'm just waiting for a role to become vacant at our central logistics warehouse, but people generally stay in roles for many years and never leave, so I could be waiting several years for an opportunity.

Two reasons I'm hanging around is that I almost feel obligated to stay since they trained me up (there is no contract stating I have to stay however). Also, I have not learn people management skills leading a small team of workers at our central warehouse which is the career path I really want to pursue. Once I have this skill, I feel I would be leaps ahead.

However, if I try to move to a new company without people management skills, I feel the only roles I'd have the skill set for would be project work, import/export documentation or data analysis, all of which I'm good at but don't interest me.

So what should I do? Stay and hope that a role comes up which will allow me to get the people management skills I need or look elsewhere for other roles that "may" be a stepping stone to leading a small warehouse logistics based team? The team I'd manage would be labourers, packers and forklift drivers, etc.

Be honest with your boss.

I like the company, my current role is not where I can add the most value, when can you move me into xxx position?

And then go looking for another role while you wait.
