Should I do HSA for my family?
« on: October 21, 2014, 12:16:19 PM »
I'm a new mustachian and want to get some advice on Health Savings Accounts.

Basically want to know if I should get one now and if I should put my wife and daughter in one or keep them on normal insurance.

Currently my wife is fully covered through her employer (health, vision, dental). I also get vision through her work.

Thus mine and my daughter's insurance through the ACA is about $30/person with a $200 deductible and $10 co pay. I graduate from law school this year and my future employer will cover our medical.

That said, I am thinking about putting myself on a high deductible plan and putting some into an HSA. However, our daughter is only 6 months old and has plenty of Dr. visits to go. We'll probably have another baby sometime within the next 3 years, so my wife will have some high healthcare costs too.

I am in a similar situation, so I just want to ask some followup questions to flesh this out?

-What is the different in deductible and for out-of-pocket maximum between the policies?
-Would you be able to have the HSA contribution taken out by your employer or would you be setting up your own HSA account (HSA contribution deducted by your employer are not subject to FICA)?
- Would wellness visit by 100% by either/both plans?
-Do you have any chronic illnesses for those that would be insured under the HDHP?

I'm not that far into it yet so I don't have all of those answers.
 * I'm not sure if my employer would do automatic deductions (small employer) but I believe my wife's would if she switched.
* Wellness visits are currently 100% on all plans, not sure under high deductible HSA.
* Chronic illnesses: no.

Does your wife's employer offer family coverage?  If they do, you and daughter are not eligible for ACA subsidies, as I understand it.  You can buy health insurance thru the ACA, but pay full price.  That's one of the big gotchas: if you are covered elsewhere, you are not eligible for subsidies, unless it is considered too expensive (over 9.5% of your income, but only the employee's costs, not the entire family).  You said DW was fully covered.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
