Hey guys,
Have a flight slated for later tonight around 8pm. We just found out early today that our 6mo old has a "minor" case of croup according to our pediatrician. She prescribed him steroids and said that he should get a lot better before the flight but either way she doesn't feel like we should cancel because of this. He's still coughing and it doesn't sound good but I suppose I would classify it as being minor since he hasn't broken out in a fever or is in major pain as far as we can tell. We did give him the steroids but I'm not sure how much it has helped. This is our first time flying with an infant, so I already have so many reservations. Now the probability that it would be unpleasant (not just for us but for everyone sitting near us) seems like it would be greater with him being sick.
It is just an hour flight where we're going (SoCal to NorCal) but we will likely be out for 2-3+ hours with getting to the airport, etc. He has been a bit more fussy I think just in general since getting sick.
If we were to cancel the flight, we'd have to end up driving up there overnight. I'm not as opposed to this since we've done it before. But I'm just wondering if we should even consider canceling the flight or not over this. I'd definitely have no hesitation if he were feverishly sick but he just has a cough and slightly more fussiness. Then again, one of my biggest fears has always been that I'm going to be "that couple with the crazy whiny kid on the last flight" :(

Also, the ped said his ears, nose and throat all look fine. At this point it just seems he has a cough

Did you call the airline and explain the situation? They might give a change flight for free. Good luck! Sounds awful!

We're able to cancel up to 10 minutes prior and will have the credit available to use later (within the year). It's Southwest. Another consideration is that this is a midweek flight, so it may not end up being that bad at all..
My parents are encouraging us just to do it... so I think we may try. Esp if our pediatrician has cleared us. I guess I'm just nervous still

I'd be more concerned about driving the six-eight hours vs hour on the flight as a mother whose child was having a minor croup (not even given steroids) then she woke us up in the middle of the night gasping for breath and by the time we got to the ER (less than fifteen) she ended up throwing up because of it. I think you'd end up at a hospital faster from the plan vs finding a hospital in the middle of Ca.

I say go for the flight since it's so short.

IMO if it's still in the contagious stage, out of courtesy to other passengers and any children they may come in contact with, don't fly. Croup is v contagious.
Two of the int'l schools where I work have had 30-50% children sick with various kinds of flu this week. One forcibly had to send feverish children home, because their parents were sending them to school and they infected everyone.

My son had croup, we went to pediatrician and he got steroids and we were sent home... Only to end up in ER at 2 am when his lips turned blue and he couldn't breath. Apparently breathing difficulties can develop very rapidly. I would be very hesitant to be far away from a hospital until he's well on the way to recovery.
Plus, croup is highly contagious and can be spread for several days after symptoms start. And it is spread by air... Confined space in an airplane... Just not nice to other passengers.

Would you not fly if you can a cold? Unless it gets bad (which is pretty much only in infants), you can't tell the difference between croup and a regular cold.

Yep! We ended up going through with it and he did very well :) Except now he's whining - I think he's tired and probably not used to his grandparents' house :T
