So I volunteer on a board, and we recently had a group conference call. The number was long distance, and I got charged for it, so much that it almost doubled my monthly bill. Would it be in bad form to ask for a reimbursement?

I don't understand why this happened, unless you are not in the U.S. Here in the U.S. I think this request would not be well received, because it would be expected you'd be calling on a cell phone with unlimited long distance. YMMV depending on what is expected where you live.

I'm in Canada and it was a US number, although everyone on the call was in Canada too. I have unlimited Canadian calling, but not US.

Yeah, I'd be upset if I had to incur international long distance for a volunteer activity. I think you have two choices: 1) ask for reimbursement or 2) at least bring up that it was a U.S. number and ask if future conference calls can use a Canadian number. Or some combination of 1 and 2.
