Shattered my phone screen -- trying to decide what to do next
« on: January 14, 2016, 12:33:41 PM »
I dropped my phone this morning and shattered the screen.  I'm trying to decide what to do next.  The phone only cost about $100 when I bought it, and is no longer available.  I don't think it is feasible/worth the cost to try to have the screen repaired (it is my only phone and I need it for communication with DS and my mom in case of emergencies, so I wouldn't want to be without the phone for more than a few hours)

I am currently using Virgin Mobile's lowest cost unlimited plan ($35/month), because way back when I got my first US cell phone it was with them and I had a ton of credit on my account due to pre-paying $15 every 3 months to keep the number active while I was out of the US.  I have slowly been spending down that credit on my monthly fees and now have about $85 left in my account.

I'm not sure I want to stick with Virgin Mobile once the credit runs out.  TMobile has a good plan for $30/month, which is what DS is on (it is one of the few carriers that supports his device), and once DH and DD are back in the states we might be able to get better rates with them on a family plan, or I could switch to something else entirely.

So, I am wondering what i should do at this point.  I can't keep using the phone in its current state -- it works, but the glass has shattered so much it is throwing off tiny little shards.  So I am considering the following options:

1)  Buy some kind of film protector for the screen, and try to keep using the current phone for three more months, until my credit runs out.  In the meantime do research on what phone/plan I want to switch to

2)  Buy a new phone from Virgin.  Virgin phones are not portable to other carriers, so this would mean I am basically committing to staying with Virgin (at a $35/month minimum charge once my credit runs out.  Options I am looking at are:

a)  Cheapest replacement Huawei phone for $30 -- I could pick this up at best buy today for the same price http://www.virginmobileusa.com/shop/cell-phones/huawei-union-phone/features/. Buying this one would probably just be a temporary replacement, and then I'd most likely get another phone/switch to another carrier when my credit runs ou

b)  Nicer Moto G for $99 -- this is about what my current phone (an LG Volt cost, and would be fine.  I'm not a heavy phone user

c)  Apple 5s 16gb for $149 -- I don't really NEED an Apple phone, but right now I use a old Ipod for my music and podcasts, and this would allow me to consolidate to one device.  But if I pay this much for a phone, I am probably going to stick with Virgin after my credit runs out.  Just not sure it is worth the extra money to me at this point/whether I want to stay with Virgin long-term.

If anybody has done the screen film/protector thing with a shattered screen and had that work for a few weeks, I'd love to know -- hard to know if I am just fantasizing at this point that that might be a viable option..  I think my best bet might be just to try to hobble along until my credit is gone on Virgin, and in the meantime research other options.

Other thoughts/advice?

If it were me I would get the cheap replacement phone to give myself more time to shop around other carries / find my "dream phone". I had a screen break into a 1000 pieces and the glass dust that would be made from the shards rubbing together would make the screen protectors almost impossible to stay down. Besides a pack of protectors is like $10 so you're only $20 away from a brand new phone! ;)

Hey maybe you'll like the 30 dollar phone enough to keep it? You never know!

I broke my moto G screen in July, put a screen protector on it, it is still going strong (for my wife).

Thanks, guys.  I think I'm probably going to go with the screen protector route to start with, and in the meantime research alternative plan options.

Can somebody post a link to IP Daley's cell phone guide?  I can't seem to find it....

So, I ended up going to a cell phone repair place, and the guy had a spare glass cover sheet that he put on for me for free.  Cost to fix phone (at least temporarily):  $0.

This is the place I went, in case anyone in Seattle ever needs similar help:

They are a chain, so also have branches in other cities.
