I have a coworker that I found out lived a mile away from me. Currently I live 18 miles away from work and it is cold out and he has offered to pick me up and drop me off. I am directly on his way and he said he doesn't mind because he likes the company, and doesn't want me to drive (prefers his car) and refuses gas money.
I like this arrangement, based on gas alone that saves me $5 per day. I have offered to buy him lunch but he normally brings his own in. Should I try to compensate him? I was thinking of getting him a gift certificate to a place he likes.

If he refuses the gas money, I think a nice gesture now and again like a gift certificate certainly can't go wrong. Very nice arrangement, and I'm sure your coworker feels appreciated as it definitely sounds like you're a considerate carpool-mate.

Yeah something would be nice. It might not be best to force money on him, but cookies or homebrew or something would be cool

I had an arrangement like that for a while where the person refused any money and gave me rides almost every day. I felt like I was mooching off of them, so when I found out we shared the same taste in music I would occasionally burn a cool CD for her. She loved it!

He doesn't drink otherwise I would offer him some homebrew (once I have another batch ready). There is a local restaurant that he raves about, I am going to see if they have gift certificates available.
