Selling Dresses and Rings?
« on: September 08, 2014, 01:08:48 PM »
Does anyone have any experience selling a wedding dress and a few bridesmaids dresses?  What site did you use?  Would you recommend it?

I also have an engagement ring and wedding ring to sell.  Likewise do you have any recommendations on sites to use?  Should I sell them together or separately?

Any other recommendations or things I'm not thinking of?

My beautician who did my makeup also runs a wedding dress rental shop, and I plan to sell my wedding dress to her. The price she offered is very good (well, I went to China to buy my wedding dress for $200 and I can sell it in the US for much more than $200 even if it's a used one).  Maybe you can look for wedding dress rental shops.

My friend sold her dress via ebay. She bought her dress for $1000, paid $200 cleaning fee and sold for about $500.

I would sell them separate. I would sell the wedding dress on Ebay with a Buy It Now price you are happy with. Maybe add in best offer. I am not sure I would sell the rings on Ebay - anyone else have experience with this? I may look into selling those back to a local jewelry store, esp. one that does consignment.

Comparing ebay selling prices to what local jewelery stores offered me I would definitely get more on ebay.  Local jewelery stores don't really offer very much for used jewelery.  I brought the rings to 3 different jewelery stores and I was offered about 10% of their appraised value.

I saw this site when googling around.  Do you have any experience buying or selling on it?

For the dress, you can also try oncewed, tradesy, and preownedweddingdress.com. I've been looking for a "used" one and those are where i started.

idonowidont offers some pretty good customer protection - the diamond (if there is one) has to match the specs you advertised - so that is the only place we really considered buying a diamond from. They do take a certain amount of commission.

Also, if you have a designer setting (Tiffany, Verragio, Tacori, etc), you might consider selling the stone and setting separately IF you can find a buyer for the stone that doesn't really want the setting. We saw several settings that might have worked for me at a steep discount on idonowidont, except they were all platinum and i wanted rose gold :/

I'm interested in ideas for rings as well.. I've had a ring for sale on consignment at a local jewlery store for a number of years now... might as well just try and unload it online somehow at this point.

I don't know about dresses but a friend of mine wanted to sell her ring after a divorce. She had all kinds of plans for the money (Vacation to Mexico, Vegas). I went with her to a jewelry store and they offered her like $500 for her $10K ring. All they wanted was the gold, they even said she can keep the diamonds because they are not worth anything. I think most people who get married are going to buy new...they have the same delusion of grandeur.

I had to have my good jewellery valued for the divorce.  Overall resale (for the divorce) was 15% of replacement.  And that was basically for the gold, not the stones.  My jeweller suggested remounting the diamond from my engagement ring (all 1/4 carat of it) in a necklace that I already own.

Side note - my DD doesn't want a diamond when she gets engaged (way down the road at this point), she would not want to wear something that valuable.  There are semiprecious stones she likes, and they will probably go that route.  Makes a lot more sense, she will actually wear it.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
