selling an unusual street find
« on: January 27, 2023, 05:24:46 PM »
I was walking the dog and came across an unusual street find with a free sign on it. It was a Siemens 14gu32a class starter for a big three phase motor. Useless to 99.9% of people, including me, but apparently people do pay lots of money for these if they need it. It appears to be unused. How would you go about trying to unload one of these things? The list price on Siemens site is about $2K.

Ebay all the way! There are already four on Ebay, in different sizes, at prices ranging from under $400 to over $1200. Though if you look at the completed listings, most of the ones that sold seem to have gone for around $100. That's still pretty good profit on a freebie! Good luck!

That looks like the way to go. Wonderful thanks. And yes $100 is fine with me!

Since I am among the 99.9%, do you have a way of testing the thing to make sure it actually works? If not, I would be sure to state that in the listing, describing it as untested with no guarantees.

For super specific items I’ve had better luck finding the forum of buffs who are into that sort of thing and posting there.

Yup. Yesterday we were given an expensive accessory for our RV by the previous owner of the rig. We plan to use it a time or two, then list it for sale on the specific forum for our rig. It's too bulky to ship, but we're still likely to find a local buyer who recognizes it's value.

Just got $200 from a site that resells electrical stuff - radwell, what a crazy world. Not $2k, but pretty good for just walking the dog around the block.

I just showed this thread to DH. He says he's pretty sure there's one on Craigslist listed for free right now, so it seems you did quite well.

You should pick it up and sell it!

If it was nearby, we might. DH is a CL Master. He bought an airless sprayer for $600, de-gunked it and sold it for $1200. Another time a contractor was closing up shop. We bought a bunch of tools for $2200. He kept what he needed (Pearl tile saw, 2 Bosch rotohammers, DeWalt dual bevel sliding compound miter saw, DeWalt job site portable table saw) and sold off the rest for $2000.

He needs no encouragement ;-)
