Title: Selling a Used Car
Post by: LearningMustachian72 on April 17, 2020, 08:23:24 AM
Hey,

First time selling a used car...

Where do folks list theirs?

Any other tips I should know of?

Craigslist.

Make sure it's clean. Take good pictures. Write a full and complete description. Be open and honest about any flaws as you'll avoid people who won't buy the car based on them, and it gives people less leverage to try to get the price down based on them.

I'm really not sure how well it's going to go right now though. How many people are going to want to meet up with a stranger and get in that stranger's car?

Thanks for the tips!

About the timing, right...I plan to clean and take pictures now but list when this dies down.

If you have a CarMax nearby, take it there and get a trade-in estimate. That way you'll know the absolute lowest price it'll sell for, and you can ignore the lowballers.

I say Facebook marketplace is either approaching or passing up Craigslist in terms of the most popular free place to buy and sell, and it most certainly has less scammers.  Join some local Auto Buy/Sell/Trade groups on Facebook and also list on the Marketplace.  That's my strong recommendation.

I sold a car to Carvana last month. They gave me the quote online and then I did a contactless drop off, super easy. If they are close enough to you they will even send a flatbed truck to pick up your car. They offered $1.5k more than the KBB "Instant Cash Offer". You'll still get more selling privately, assuming you can do so, but I wanted to avoid the hassle and extra personal contact.

I'd say facebook marketplace. Craigslist is no longer free so most folks don't list there anymore. I posted in both places and got zero responses from CL. Facebook seems to have a lot of people who do not follow up on messages though. I just sold a vehicle on facebook a week ago. Market was hotter than I expected.

Whoa, that's new. Guess I'll have to change my tactic next time around.

Ya I think it was a mistake on CL's part. It goes against what made CL in the first place.
