Amazon Prime for Canadians - worth it?
« on: December 30, 2016, 11:46:34 AM »
I'm debating Amazon Prime, and wanted to hear from other Canadians on whether it's useful/worth it.

Reasons I'm considering it:
- we're really rural (nearest grocery store/pharmacy is 25km away, and they're on the pricy side). I'll be on maternity leave for the next year, and my husband is likely to be unemployed for a few months, so us needing ANYTHING would mean a 50km round trip to the store... not ideal.
- 20% off diapers makes them cheaper than costco. And Costco is 50km away. And the toddler is still in diapers, never mind the newborn. (And we tried cloth... the arguments with Husband over laundry were not worth it. Disposable diapers are cheaper than therapy.) Just the % off on diapers would seem to pay off the Prime membership within a few months.

Oh the down side... it seems like paying for shopping, which I'm not a fan of. I don't want to buy more than we need/can afford (especially when our income will consist of maternity leave payments and unemployment payments....) because it's suddenly easier. I don't know if there are any other advantages to the Canadian Prime membership... most advantages (tv, etc) seem to be US-based.

Canadians - weigh in? Do you have it? Is it worth it? Cost/benefit analysis?

I currently have it. We go on and off the Amazon prime train :-/ You actually don't need it to get parcels delivered - you just need to order $35 worth of product to get free shipping IIRC.

When it used to be $25 worth of product for free shipping, I would just let stuff build up in my cart until we hit the minimum and then go through the checkout and you'll see the free shipping option.

Prime gets it here faster and also allows you to buy something under the $35 limit yet it still ships for "free."

Prime video just arrived in Canada a few weeks ago. We have yet to fully explore this as we are currently enjoying a one month free trial of Netflix which I plan to cancel.

Well, trigger pulled. Mostly out of a baseline calculation that the membership cost will pay for itself in 4-6 months of diapers ALONE (depending on how long the toddler stays in diapers... but diapers for 2'kids adds up, at 9$/box savings compared to the next cheapest option, which is Costco).

I do kinda wish that my husband would agree to cloth diapers, but we tried with our first when she was a newborn... and, frankly, the amount of arguing over the laundry made a 40$/month expense seem reasonable as a contrast. Some savings aren't worth it. Sadly.
