I currently have just under $500k in tax sheltered retirement accounts (401k, IRA, Roth IRA, etc.) Currently all of that money is invested in various mutual funds. When I leave my current job I plan on consolidating my retirement money into my IRA and Roth IRA. I would like to be able to invest in something other than the traditional stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Real estate is very appealing (I own quite a bit already) and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with self-directed IRAs or any other retirement vehicles which would allow you to invest retirement money in non-traditional assets.
