You know, I went to a sex toy party in college that in retrospect I assume must have been an MLM, but none of us cared, they were selling us awesome sex toys! That was my last good experience with MLMs.

A relative has decided that peddling Juice Plus is her ticket to spectacular wealth. She's been at it for several years now and has spent considerably more traveling to far-flung Juice Plus conferences than she has made selling its products. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and I can already hear her harassing captive family members around the dinner table with her pitch about how she's never looked or felt better (despite being overweight and constantly afflicted with colds).

Because I am chronically ill, I was once a favorite target. To show me how much she believed in her product, she wanted to give me a free sample to help boost my immune system. Despite having become a self-styled health expert once she "read the Juice Plus literature" (plus, her chiropractor endorses it, and she herself has watched PowerPoint presentations about germs and making delicious smoothies, so she's practically passed the boards!), she stared at me blankly when I explained that my immune system is in fact so overactive that it requires suppression.

I had to laugh at this. I have lupus and chronic kidney failure, and I always have people trying to sell me shakes, distilled water, essential oils, and all kinds of other nonsense.

Them: "This will boost your immune system!"
Me: "Um, no thanks. My immune system thinks my organs are foreign bodies. I don't want to give it any more power."
