Career Advice

Hi all -
I've been working in advertising for the past 11 years, and after 6 years in media planning at an agency and another 5 years in client services on the sales / publisher side of the business, I no longer am interested in the industry and could honestly care less if a campaign has a strong results or not. It's all just blah for me at this point.

I'm VERY ISTJ and prefer to work alone once I have an understanding of the role / work that I'm doing.

Below are a list of my skills and curious what others think would be a good transition in or outside of advertising:
  • Very organized and efficient (i'm overseeing 3x the amount of sales accounts I should be but finish my work so early they've given me more to fill my days)

    High attention to detail

Enjoy project management (cracking the whip on people to ensure everyone is doing their part to meet deadlines)

Really great in excel with budgets (i also have a big interest on where a company is receiving there money and how they're spending it - accounting future??)

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

So

You want the forum to suggest a job for you and all you've really given us is that you are good at excel, want to be the boss, but prefer to work alone.

You could start your own business...That way you can use excel all you want, be the boss, alone and crack down on yourself.

We probably need more information.

Age: I could guess around 37-40
Education background: betting on some sort or post-secondary
Location:
Ability to relocate: family? friends? kids? house? are they important to you at all? Will you be okay with downsizing your house with a new job?
Personal interest: it seems you're not interested in your work so maybe redirecting to something you're interested in would help
Pay: Do you require your job to pay a certain amount? due to debt or spending?

That's all I can think of but anything you might want to include would benefit this discussion...

Scheduler for project management,   construction cost estimator  (for a large building contractor).

Both need to have attention to detail, crack the whip, yet work alone 80% of the time.    oh, and can pay well, especially the estimator.

Since you worked agency and then publisher side, I'm assuming you work in NYC? The good news is, that kind of background (especially after 11 years) is sought-after and well-paid in the brand/vendor side. If you want to make a move for more income, either of those routes (though brand-side more than vendor) will get you there. If you want to make a move for more interesting work, the vendor side could have you work on mid-level Spec Ops or strategy roles which are usually a little more exciting (and more geared towards analytical people).

If you want to switch altogether from the industry, you probably would take some sort of pay cut. Product/project management comes to mind - and the salaries for those are fairly close to what I assume you're making. Maybe consulting?

If you have the aptitude for accounting you can land jobs pretty easily if you can pass the cpa test.

Hi all-

Thanks for the input so far!

For clarification, I am 35 and living in Los Angeles. I've thought about NYC for quite a few years, but due to financial limitations I could never afford it. I was VERY close to moving about 2 1/2 years ago, but then met someone and fell in love. After trying (and failing) at relationships for almost 10 years in this city, I felt the "gods" were telling me LA was right for me to pursue this relationship and happy to say we're still together :)

I know some have suggested client side marketing, but truth be told I'm just not interested in marketing at all. I've realized my values have changed and the excitement and "lifestyle" it was selling just isn't what I'm about anymore.

My boyfriend suggests I look at a project manager / line producer type role which oversee's budgets, schedules, etc. but not sure if that commits me to staying in LA.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
