HSA qualified medical expenses - bandaids, etc?
« on: October 26, 2015, 10:25:46 PM »
Hey guys,

I can't seem to find any definitive source on this but what medical expenses can an HSA be used to cover? Do bandages, bandaids, first aid kits, etc count like they do for Health Care FSAs?

If you can use your HSA as another investment account instead. Unless it is a major medical expense do not worry about using your HSA for things like bandages, first aid kits or other small purchases. The only time I plan on using my HSA if I have to incur a major medical bill. Thankfully I (along with my wife and kid) have not and honestly I have no determined a dollar threshold where I would dip into it if we were to incur one, I guess it will be a situation where we will know if it happens.

Even if this is your plan it's still a good idea to track all these expenses. Every dollar you can count against a qualified medical expense that you have had since you opened the HSA is a dollar you can take out of the HSA whenever you want completely tax free.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
