saving for income property/retirement home

Was curious what others do as far as where they save for an income property/retirement home?  I assume that you'd use your taxable acct perhaps?  In the next 3-5 years i'd like have saved enough for a decent down payment on a rental property that we may consider retiring in once we fire.  Thanks

Any money that you will definitely need in that time frame should be in a high yield savings account, short term CD's or something similar that will not lose principal over the time frame.
