Rust on steak knives?
« on: August 19, 2018, 05:11:32 PM »
Our steak knives have recently started showing spots of rust. It seems like they all started showing them around the same time, weirdly. Nothing has changed in how we handle them.

Is there an easy way to reverse this process? These knives are not worth spending a lot of effort on, given their original value and how tightly booked we are at this point in our lives. But if I could solve this problem with ten-fifteen minutes of effort, it might be worth it to avoid buying a new set. Does anyone know of a way?

I've heard that white vinegar will dissolve rust if left to soak, but I've not tried it myself.  I wonder if the rust would re-appear...

Rub with wire wool to get the rust off, followed by some metal polish, followed by washing before use to get the remains of the polish off.  If the knives are kept clean and dry further rust should not be an issue.

Do you wash them in the dishwasher? If you leave the dishwasher closed when it is drying, your knives will rust. Put the dishwasher door open as soon as it has finished, so the damp can come out.

That might be the issue. I feel like we've been washing them in the dishwasher for a long time, though, and it never used to be a problem. Anyway, I'll try grabbing some steel wool at the grocery next time I'm there and we'll see if we can get these things polished off.
