Title: Roll over active 401k to Vanguard?
Post by: zahampton on December 04, 2012, 09:42:15 AM
This might be a wildly crazy idea so I wanted to run it by you lovely people to get your input. Is it possible/rational/feasible to roll over an active 401k to a new Vanguard account? I will continue to contribute to the 401k after the rollover.

Normal 401(k) accounts exist only with an employer, so Vanguard doesn't do 401(k)s for its investors. What you would want to do is an in-service distribution to a traditional IRA. Does your 401(k) custodian allow those?

Few, if any, companies will allow you to roll-over your 401(k) to an IRA unless you leave the company.
