Cotton couch covers/large throws?
« on: December 09, 2024, 06:54:11 PM »
Hey all.

I have been keeping fleece throws on the couch for many years, almost like a cover, but just draped on. I do some blending/contrasting colors of throws, lots of pillows of different color and sizes. I think it looks great - for a couch with throws over it. I call it the sultanate of cat - which is why I try to keep the couch covered at all angles at all times.

Well looks good in the beginning! Try to wash weekly (cuz-cats) and after a few months, can look not so nice. Especial if someone* acidentally does a hot wash or dry! While I am glad they recycle plastic bottle for fleece, I am in a *I'm sure* many years battle to reduce/eliminate as much plastic based stuff in the house as possible.

Ideally - I'd like something as lush as really thick fleece, but made out of cotton. Google suggests this is possible, but I can't find any anywhere. I have an L shaped sectional so some very large ones would be good.

Looking for other natural fibers if not cotton, but not anything animal based. like silk or wool.

Any suggestions?

French terry in 100 cotton?

I do vote for using existing items as long as possible even if they contain plastics is the more environmentally friendly choice than replacing just to remove plastic from the home.

My cats do have an affinity for fleece throws but will settle on a cotton blanket when necessary. I use the fleece as bate to try to contain the shedding.

Eta: my sentence structure is awful and I’ve not got the brain left to fix it. Sorry. Hope I make some sense.

Try searching for "chunky cotton throw" or "cotton chenille throw."

I have a fairly thick cotton throw that is jacquard woven, so it's as thick as several layers of the yarn it's woven from. However--and I think this would also be true of the ones those searches turn up--a cat's claws would probably pull the threads out of line pretty fast and reduce it from "looks good" to "not so nice" even faster than fleece.

A waffle weave blanket?

I feel like the really soft stuff would not only snag easily but might not wash so well.

I know you said no wool . . . but what you're looking for is wool.

A good wool blanket is incredibly tough and will last ages longer than cotton.  Animals tend to get along with it really well (I've never had a dog that didn't enjoy sleeping on a wool blanket).  Worth the extra cash in my opinion.  If you're concerned about the treatment of the sheep, around here there a few sheep farms that make their own wool who treat their animals well, you might be able to find similar near you.
