experience with overstock.com?
« on: September 12, 2014, 01:44:47 PM »
I'm looking at some furniture options (namely a platform bed frame) and without the requisite woodworking skills (and time or energy, frankly) and with not much showing up used, I'm trying to find something nice-ish in the new-discount direction. Overstock.com keeps popping up but I've seen really mixed online reviews. I'd love to hear what other mustachians might have experienced in ordering from them (or staying away, as the case may be)…

thanks!

Every experience I have had with overstock has been wonderful. Got a radio from them that was slightly damaged. I got a full refund instantly and they didn't require me to send it back. The delivery company for a dresser dropped the box and destroyed the dresser, overstock had another on at my house within a week and didn't demand that I send te broken one back or even take pictures to prove it.  They have free and very fast shipping. Great customer service.  Get the phone app and click the lotto button. They put a lot of coupons out for 10% off or more.  The app is free.

I've only used them to buy area rugs, as has my  sister.  We've had great experiences.  I've seen the same beautiful wool rugs for sale at more than double the price in local stores.  The rugs have arrived very quickly.  The only issue is that of looking at the image on a monitor and hoping the colors match.  I only buy ones with lots of reviews, because if the colors are off that tends to get mentioned.

The kind of furniture you see on Overstock is probably not going to be terribly high quality.  I'd try to see if I could find the same brands in stores and check out the construction.

My experience with them was fine.  I ordered some bath towels that had good reviews but the feel of them was horrible.  Was no trouble to return them.

If you do order from them see if you can go through your credit cards rewards mall, they usually give a generous percentage back.  During the holidays it's often better.

A quick look at Overstock shows me prices that aren't significantly cheaper than local furniture stores. Why not just go to a local store and look around?

If there's a model home furniture store in your area, that's also a good place to look. The one near me has a range of furniture ranging from new, to looks-new, to noticeably used.

Go to an estate sale or a thrift store or an antique store or a flea market. New furniture is unnecessary cheap crap from god knows where and with who knows what materials.

This thread has way less reason to be on a MMM forum than something about politics!

[MOD NOTE: Chill icky.  Someone asking about experiences with a company is a legitimate question.]

Gee, misplaced anger some?

I'm looking at some furniture options (namely a platform bed frame) and without the requisite woodworking skills (and time or energy, frankly) and with not much showing up used, ...

The OP has looked for used, and apparently hasn't found one she would like to have. S/he is looking for additional options and requesting input on people's experience with a well known vendor. Nothing wrong with that.

I haven't had any problems purchasing things from Overstock.com. Everything I have ordered has been what I ordered and in good condition so I can't say anything about their customer service or returns.

Service has been good; furniture has been hit or miss.  We bought a bed which has been great, but the matching dresser/nightand hasnt had the same quality.

The only mustachian answer is LOOK HARDER. Ordering furniture on the internet is ridiculous. There is so much of it here already and its incredibly easy to find. If you can't find a bed, I'm betting you haven't bought much used ever, and that's no way to achieve a life of low expenses.

WE have had very good luck with things & the things we bought have been a lot cheaper.  We wanted a memory foam mattress for our guest room & I bought a really good one from them & it was cheaper then anything I could get in person.

thanks for the input on your experiences with Overstock.com….

Though I don't need to defend anything to anyone, haven't decided to marry Overstock.com - it's just something that came up in my various searches. I've been finding a number of great deals on freecycle and craigslist but the bed hasn't proven to be so simple.

Also, I'm slightly wary of used furniture right now, having just had a bedbug scare (after staying in a hotel on the east coast, getting bitten, but thankfully not having brought them home) and have a friend whose neighbor had them (here in CA, after having an out of town relative move in with them, and the expensive treatment wasn't even successful…). Maybe that's deserving of facepunches, that I'd rather buy a new bed, and in that case, punch away if you feel so inclined.

Meanwhile, thanks to the folks who simply answered my question. After looking at the prices there, though (and what you get for the price), I'm thinking I need to learn some ana-white inspired woodworking skills… :-)

Bedbugs live in upholstery. IF you buy only wood or metal, you won't have a problem especially after a good rub down. Think of all the chemicals in the fake MDF stuff they use, you don't want that as much as you don't want bedbugs.

Ana White is pretty awesome. Projects do take energy to tackle, especially when you're a beginner. But even if it fails miserably you'll feel so so much better after for trying. I love my stuff that I've found steals on, built, fixed or traded for so much more than anything I've ever impulsively bought.

I bought a platform bed from amazon called the "Nomad" its worked well, I think I paid about $150 for the queen frame. It was pre-mustachian but frankly, I would conisder it a good buy even now.

Here I found it http://www.amazon.com/Nomad-Solid-Hardwood-Platform-Frame/dp/B000KV4MKS

Bedbugs can get into little spaces in the joints of furniture.

Have you looked at any furniture stores potentially closing or doing liquidation sales in your area? I LOVE these sales because these stores are looking to quickly get rid of pieces and you'll have more room to barter.....

I've never used Overstock myself but I guess my humble opinion would be, I'd be afraid to buy such a large purchase without seeing it/touching it first.

Platform beds are thankfully one of the very easiest things to build! Much more so then a dresser or table or bench even.

I've bought a few things from overstock and after realizing I was spending more time returning than was worth it, had to quit my obsession. I've bought beds, chairs, light fixtures, tables. So much went back. Really really low quality stuff. And when I wrote negative reviews, those were removed. Never again. My time is too valuable. One thing I did buy that I kept:  knockoff wishbone chairs. Almost indistinguishable from the real thing and saved over $700 per chair. However, they are made in China using who knows what. No end caps on the legs. Still had newspaper stuck to the feet where the legs were varnished. I will buy American from now on.
