Retirement "classes" - worthwhile or bs?
« on: January 18, 2019, 07:08:07 PM »
Not retiring early but I am coming up on retirement age. Recently I've received advertising for two different free classes for people retiring. These do not appear to be the usual dinner pitches for hucksters selling annuities and the like. Both offerings are two 3 hour classes and offered by two different 501(c)(3) nonprofits. They advertise addressing a variety of useful topics like maximizing social security, evaluating Roth conversions etc etc. one is offered by sofausa.org and is hosted at a local community college. I don't recall the name of the other nonprofit.

My question is, has anybody here attended one of these? Was it useful?

A different country, but I went to the free seminars they had for people who were retiring. I learnt something at them, so they weren't a waste of time. The companies tend to put these seminars on so they stop having everyone ring them up when they're about to retire, and asking the same questions. It's probable that you know many more of the answers than everyone else at the seminar. It also gives you a chance to see all the information together, and ask your own questions. If nothing else, you can be gobsmacked about some of the questions and situations people are in.
