Drying clothes indoors...working out the kinks
« on: November 29, 2015, 10:07:03 AM »
I'd like to dry a lot more of our clothing indoors this winter rather than run the dryer.   We have two drying racks and an empty closet with a pole....and it's super-dry here so things dry within hours.

My problem is definitely of the first-world variety:  I haven't yet found a way for us to hang "nicer" shirts on hangers to dry where it doesn't leave weird spots in the shoulders where the hanger was. For those who dry indoors without an indoor clothesline (which I don't have space for)  how do you make it so you don't have weird shoulders/sleeves and have to iron stuff?  Are there special giant hangers or...?

Thanks. Certainly not earthshattering but I think I could more easily talk my lovely non-MMM husband into it if I could come up with a solution for that  :)

We mainly solve this by not wearing nicer shirts! 😀

But seeing as that's not particularly helpful...there are giant hangers with wide shoulder arms, my husband has some leftover from suit jackets that he uses on the rare occasion a dress shirt has to be washed. That avoids those weird dimples. There are also sweater racks where you lay the item out flat on a mesh type surface for air circulation. We don't have one but I suspect it would be pretty easy to diy one.

We went to Berlin in winter one year for vacation. The apartment had a tiny washer and a drying rack. That experience totally kicked our butts back into drying everything on a rack! Good luck!

We lay a towel down and dry items like that flat on dining room table. Mostly sweaters and the like.

A drying rack works really nicely over hangers for things like this. I got this one from Ikea: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40244831/
It works great, and folds flat for storage in a closet or under a bed. Murr's idea with a towel would work too!

To avoid shoulder bumps and stretching I dry nice shirts upside down using pants hangers or clothes pins on upside down on a regular hanger.  The creases on the hem are easy to iron out (or not...).

I have the cheaper version of this and it is great. OP, what I do for shirts is use hangers with the exaggerated shoulder drops like this:

I found some at TJ Maxx or Ross awhile back.

The other solution is to drape the shirt directly over the rack (basically splayed out over the rack) OR between the bars (basically the shirt is "folded" in half over a bar - but that could still cause creases).

Buy a pool noodle. Cut it into half coathanger lengths. Cut a slit along the length, and put it over the wire coathanger.

I hang mine over the drying racks. I have never noticed a bump where they lay on the rack. You know if you do thought a quick shot with the iron would only take a moment.

I have a big thick rounded hanger meant for heavy winter coats that would work well for drying dress shirts without leaving the dimple.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
