I had been reading about RW from the blog and since my wife's T-Mobile bill went up from $58 to $70 with her phone slowly dying on her, I figure it would be a good time to get her on board with it. She was hesitant but we read more together and found some youtube videos and I got her to agree to try it if she could get the Moto X ($299 one) with the $25/mth plan. We placed the order the other day so it will take a week or so to get it in.
Once the phone comes in, how do we change everything over? She has a sim card in her current phone (Galaxy S3). Can that be switched into the Moto X so she has all her apps and contacts? Her number is portable based on the website's query but we don't know when she can cancel T-Mobile. I can't find any contact number to reach someone at RW and she isn't that tech savvy so I want to make sure this goes smoothly so she doesn't try to switch back and then ask for a $500+ phone :-P
For those wondering, no I'm not rocking an IPhone 6 and making her be cheap. I'm a real cheap add on($15 or so) on my mom's family plan(yeah, weaksauce that I don't pay but I've offered) and I use some sort of flip phone from 2007.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks mustachians!

It'll also help cover greater wisdom on transitioning between carriers in general.
Odds are though, you're probably just looking at a manual address book transition if she's not already on an Android smartphone.

She already is on an Android Smartphone but I'll give the link a read when I get some time so I can learn more about it.

I have been very happy with Republic. MMM never replied to my query on the Republic Wireless post about responding to the anti-RW sentiment in the forums. When I got that phone, there was an app that basically ported everything from my previous phone to the new phone; the directions were easy to follow and included with the phone.

Anti-RW sentiments? A large number of forum posters have RW...and those that suggest alternatives do it in a fact-filled, congenial way, like so:

I guess I'm just confused where this "anti-RW sentiment" is, and why you'd want MMM to address it?

I used bluetooth to tranfsfer my contact to the MotoX from my flip phone. Try that.

I switched from Verizon to RW. I just ported my numbers over and Verizon closed my account. I didn't have to call and cancel. I already had an Android phone linked to Google so all the information switched to my new phone easily.
I don't know about T-Mobile, but Verizon doesn't charge partial months. So if I had ported my number at the beginning of the month, I would've paid both Verizon and RW for the whole month.

I have had Republic since last fall and just switched my wife over in January. It was super easy. It comes with a new phone number that you can use while you test it to make sure it is what you want. Once you know it is for you, it will walk you through very easy steps about moving your contacts and porting in your old number. It worked flawlessly for us and four friends that have switched as well. We ended up moving to the $10 a month plan. After adding all of the free wifi of the places we frequent and adding Copilot GPS (Does not need a data plan to work) we are completely satisfied.

My husband and I just made the switch last week. I got the $149 phone and he got the $99 one. Both of them work great and since my old phone was also a Google/Android one everything switched over seamlessly. I used this app called Migrate and could not believe how easy it was. You just download it on the old phone and the new, and using the new phone you snap a picture of a QR code on the old.....then all the data (like pictures, text and call history, etc) all "migrates" over. Magic!
Only hiccup we had was that our phone numbers took like a week to transfer. Turns out it is because our old carrier was not "releasing" them as Republic requested. Probably because they wanted to keep us on a little longer to keep charging us. Dicks.
The only regret I have is that I am kicking myself for not doing this sooner! Our phone bill used to be almost $100, now it is $25.
