Remote contingencies in estate planning
« on: June 29, 2021, 04:09:35 PM »
I am confused on who to nominate as remote contingency in my estate plan. The attorney explained to me that, in CA, it kicks in when there are no descendants. So, does that mean I can name anyone? What did some of you do? Any charity?

My mom and I just had this discussion when she had her will/trust set up this year.  I have enough loved ones for a primary and secondary beneficiary for now.  If either of those people pass, I will be giving to a charity that I believe in.  My mom struggled with this.  My dad has already passed and I'm an only child.  She isn't close to her family and my dad's family is well off and wouldn't need her money.  She ultimately chose a nursing home that our family and church has had close ties to over the past thirty years.  Unless I pass first, her estate will be modest but a nice chunk to help make the home better for the residents.
