Title: Refrigerator went out...need help asap
Post by: Baylor3217 on May 03, 2013, 05:54:03 PM
I need some mustachian ideas asap

1) what to do with the food in the fridge?  Any ingenious ideas?

2) repair guy said (for $70) that it would cost about $450 to repair.

Probably have $200 worth of food in the fridge

Some things will be okay unrefrigerated, I think ... ketchup, mustard, soy sauce ...

Get a block of ice and put anything expensive in a cooler.

Don't open the freezer until you need to.

Or if you're on good terms with your neighbours and they're close by, ask if you can put some stuff in their fridge. Do they have a mini fridge you could borrow?

I found a place online that buys fridge's from craigs list etc and refurbishes them.  For some reason, I don't like the thought of using a used fridge long term.

Probably can't fit what I have in here in someone else's fridge.  Just went shopping.

This is the suck :)

I mainly just need to make it through tonight to either buy new / refurbished tomorrow or repair existing tomorrow.

Anyone have any experience putting garbage bags full of ice in the fridge to keep it cool?  it's going to turn out to be the biggest cooler i own.

Buy some dry ice.

Most people in rented apartments are always using a used fridge.  I've never had a "new" one! I can't even fathom anything gross about it.  Just like a used sink, a used floor, a used dining table, or a used toilet it can be cleaned!

How many hours of your labor are you willing to expend to earn the after-tax money to support your "new fridge" standards?

When the hurricane rolls through here, we can get away with 1-2 days of no power if we don't open the doors.  After that we eat what we can from the fridge (dinner from the veggie drawer gets old fast when you had it for breakfast & lunch) while you BBQ the freezer's contents.  Think of it as partying like it's 1899.

The cost of dry ice is minimal compared to the savings of spending 2-3 days on Craigslist instead of throwing your credit card at Home Depot or Sears.

Well, our fridge is "used".  I mean, we bought it new, but that was in 2001.  We have since replaced the fan and a broken shelf.
