Feasible to bike to carpool location 12 miles away?
« on: July 27, 2012, 06:48:14 AM »
I have a carpool situation with three people (A, B, and Me)  that works like this right now:

Monday -> .Meet at A's 12 miles away, I drive to work
Tuesday -> Meet at my house, A drives to work
Wednesday -> Meet at my house, I drive to work
Thursday -> Meet at A's, B drives to work
Friday -> Meet at A's, A drives to work

This is because B is only available on 3 of the days and it's much easier for him to get to A's than my house.

But I do end up driving somewhere 4 days a week still, though three of the days the distance is cut drastically.

But I got to thinking, might it be worth it and possible to bike 24 miles round trip on Thursday and Friday?  I have no bike right now and I have never been big on biking in the past, but MMM really evangelizes the shit out of it.  I would have to leave my house at 5:50 AM to make it there by 6:50 (according to google maps).

Am I out of my damn mind?

EDIT: I should mention the only two roads I can take are the two major highways of the area.

That sounds pretty bad. There's probably a better solution, like a different car pool group. Heck, if you're so far that biking 12 miles to hitch a ride sounds like a possibility to you, maybe you should move.

12 miles is not bad, IF you are in shape and the roads are level.  Major highways? Depends on the width of the shoulder.  If there is a good, wide shoulder so that you can ride well away from the traffic, it should be fine.  But try the ride a few times on weekends, etc, before you commit to doing it for work.

I've been commuting by bike and foot for a decade and hope to never drive on a daily basis again. But I'm sorry to say, the ride you're describing sounds horrendous and I don't think I'd do it. (But the worst part to me is the what-in-the-name-of-all-that-is-good time of departure. I haven't seen dawn in my own time zone in a long time.)

Would A be willing to accommodate a shower when you arrive? Or that you drop off clean clothes on Mondays? Riding without extra gear is much more pleasant. And I would think it'd only be courteous to your pool to freshen up before sharing what must be a pretty long drive.

How long is the trip once you reach the meeting point?

You should look into moving. You'll get hours of your life back every week and save a ton of money.

EDIT: down the road, that is. I know you're not in a situation that affords you that freedom right now.
