Mobile Hotspot Tech Options
« on: March 22, 2018, 08:03:30 AM »
Hi. I work remotely and plan on moving to the mountains soon and will need Internet access. I will need reliability for work and lots of data for my wife watching TV. Our housing expense will be dropping so much that expense isn't really too much of a concern but, if we can save on this then even better. I currently have Republic Wireless with a mobile hotspot but it doesn't pick up in the area we're moving to. I know about mobile boosters a little because I have one in my vehicle and it picks up almost everywhere. I can't leave that on all day though so need another option. I'm not sure if there is a booster that would work with Republic Wireless.

I've found some recommendations on a nomadic living website recommending Verizon Jetpack with an antenna. It's about $140/mo for 20GB. Startup costs are $160 contract/$260 no contract. I figure I'd go the no contract route in case it does't work good enough then I'm not locked in. Unfortunately, I have no idea how much data we use as I'm currently running through cable and we have cable for TV also. (This is included in the association fees.) I think I can check my data usage but it's not going to account for TV.

Does anyone know if this would be a good deal or if there are better options please let me know. I've also seen boosters for $500 but if that could make my RW phone or a cheaper service work that would be worth the start-up costs. I think RW is 3g though and probably not fast enough.

Thanks.

What did you wind up doing?  Curious how it worked out.  We are RVing, and got a Verizon mifi hotspot, and spend $80 / month for "unlimited" data (which us really just 15 GB before it slows way down).  We have an antenna for it and get pretty good reception in most rural areas.  We also have a Skyroam hotspot, which has unlimited data for $99/month, but doesn't work in really remote areas.

I bought a WeBoost but it didn't work so I sold it on EBay. Ultimately, we bought a place and it had DSL available. It's fast enough but quite expensive. About 80/mo. and it's not that fast.

We live in an RV but ours is permanently mounted on land we bought. We travel with a fancy tent, cots, and camp chairs.

We were almost going to buy a WeBoost, but the cost seemed a bit high.  Glad you are covered with the DSL!
