After 15+ years of faithful service in a region with very hard water, our Braun coffee maker is giving up the ghost. It has a switch that shuts off automatically and it's starting to trip long before the coffee is done. I would personally just like to get a Bodum but that won't work for DH. We brew 2-3 cups of pre-ground good quality coffee (e.g. Lavazza) every day. We don't need anything programmable or fancy and would like something basic and reliable. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I take tea myself, but how about the Cuisinart DCC-3200?

Thanks for the link! I've read good things about the next one on the list - costs more but has less features and seems to be a real quality unit.
I think I might just take ours apart and see if I can't replace the automatic switch with a plain old on-and-off. It'll look awful, but who cares? The element seems to be working fine, the coffee is always piping hot, and I love the thermal carafe.

If you haven't already, run a pot or two of vinegar through it to de-lime it. I have to do this once in a while to keep my iced tea maker working. It does the same thing otherwise, trips off before a full pot.

I've been using a Clever Coffee Dripper with wonderful results for the past 3 years:

Since the design is so simple, there's basically nothing that will wear out.

Yep, we do that regularly. You wouldn't believe how hard the water is here. Doesn't help :-(

I used to have a Melita thing that looks pretty much the same. It only does one cup at a time though, correct?

We are very partial to our Bunn coffee maker. Quick coffee and has been reliable for the past several years. It was our house-warming gift to ourselves...lol.

What the hell, going on the way you do, you might just as well go full retard on the thing:

As with most household stuff, The Sweet Home has a wonderful buying guide (http://m.thesweethome.com/reviews/best-coffee-maker/). I have the predecessor to their runner up pick, the Bonvita BV1800TH, and it really does make a good cup.

Spendy but I know a lot of coffee snobs who swear by Moccamaster.
I'm a single cup guy so I just use an Aeropress.

It's similar to the Melita, but has a mechanism to release the fluid when
it's placed on top of your cup, so there's less work involved.
The Large Clever Coffee Dripper brews up to 16 oz, which would actually
be almost 2 cups for me, but I only brew one cup at a time.

Check out the Goodwills in the area and you can find plenty of quality brand coffee makers for pennies on the dollar. If you have issues with things from Goodwill, just give it a good cleaning with Vinegar. Help yourself out while helping someone else out with your purchase as well.

After much research we bought a Bonavita to replace out Hamilton beach machine that died at the 2 year mark. We generally brew 7-10 pots a week, so we wanted a quality machine. It isn't exactly a mustachian purchase..but it makes really great coffee very quickly. We have used it for about a month now, and my only small complaints are that I wish it made a slightly larger pot and that the cord was a little bit longer.

I'll bite - I'm curious as to how I'm going on the way I do?
