Recommendations for web domain registration?
« on: May 21, 2013, 01:23:39 PM »
Hello,

I want to register a domain name that I won't be using for a while, if ever, and I am looking for a recommendation on which company to use.

I have several registered with GoDaddy, but that's more out of complacency than anything, and I suspect it's not the cheapest or best at this point.

Anyone know of a good one?

Thanks!

GoDaddy is a shitty company whose business practices are awful and well documented:

Go with anybody but them. I have used both Namecheap and Gandi with good results in the past.

Have you looked into Bluehost?

Their commercials aren't as "interesting" as GoDaddy's, but Bluehost seems to be staying out of the glare of negative publicity...

I use bluehost, based on the recommendation of a few friends.  I like it.

Thanks, I will check them out. I have one domain registered with namecheap, never heard of Gandi, and have heard good things about bluehost.

Agreed, want to leave GoDaddy.

I registered a few domains with GoDaddy years and years ago, and transferred them all to Namecheap last year.

I'm still using GoDaddy.  Not thrilled with all their practices, but then again, I'm in the same boat with the other registrars.  Still seem to be middle-bottom end of pricing overall, but have provided me with the quality of service that the expensive ones used to.  I've tried some cheap ones in the past and not been happy.

Make sure to stop back and keep us updated on who you choose and how it goes.

I have been in the process of switching my domain registration and hosting to Bluehost (based on all the recommendations on the forums) from iPage.

So far it has been night and day difference from ease of use to speed to transparency in what they are charging you. After three years of really crappy service (as in hours spent a month with their online chat trying to actually get some speed...which would be bumped up again for a few weeks and drop off) Their into rate was really low...but now that it is time to renew they are charging more then Bluehosts regular rate, not to mention their habit of charging you for products and services despite you telling them you mo longer want them and a very unhelpful "help section" when it comes to information regarding what you are paying for and how to stop payments.

GoDaddy is horrible. Do not even SEARCH for a domain name on their website, or you will find it has mysteriously been purchased right after you search for it.

NameCheap.com is the way to go. It is easy to use and keeps domain names organized.

I've got a few domains with them, and I've not had a bit of trouble.

I use https://www.name.com/ for everything, have no intention of ever switching. Top notch customer service.

You can buy a domain name from $0.99 to $3.99 using the following trick:

Google the term "cheap domain registration", then click one of the adwords advertising a low price.

The hosting providers offer specials to people who google this term that are not available when you visit the site directly.  Sometimes you can pay between $.99 and $3 for .com domain registrations which normally cost $12.00 or so.  Note that ICANN actually charges these companies $12 to register the domain, so they are selling them to you at a $8-11 loss on the hope they can upsell you other services.  Not to mention the $10/click they are probably paying to be in that position.

Here is a screenshot of the search: http://cl.ly/image/1N2i2z3J0a1N
Here is a screenshot of the godaddy page with the $0.99 domain name: http://cl.ly/image/291q0Y340Q2O

The ads you want to click are the top 3 on the left and all entries on the right.  I usually just go with Godaddy.

Thirded! I used to have a domain on Gandi which I eventually gave up because I didn't need it. They're good for the more unusual TLDs like .me and european country specific ones. All my current domains are on namecheap. They throw in whoisguard, you get plenty of subdomains, mail forwarding and all the other things thrown in. There are zero annoying offer mails, but they remind you promptly when domains are about to expire.
