Recommendations for Best Credit Card Signup Bonus
« on: May 10, 2022, 08:03:04 PM »
Can anyone recommend me a credit card with a good sign up bonus?  I am about to have a high amount of expenses the next few months and am looking for a credit card I can churn.

Has anyone tried business CCs that don’t have a business?  I’ve looked at some of those and they seem to have higher rewards.  Do they make you provide details about your business?  I currently don’t have a business, but may become a freelancer in the next 6 months.

Has anyone had trouble canceling the card before you pay the annual fee (before the year end)?  In most cases it seems like the sign up bonus becomes negligible after you pay the annual fee.  I don’t know if some of the CC companies have caught onto churning these days.

I don’t plan to get into routine churning, but I do see a good opportunity here given that I have high expenses in the near future.

Go to Doctor of Credit, it's the best place to find reliable info on card and bank bonuses.
"Best" really depends on your spending. The more you spend, the better! (At least for bonuses). I'm doing some smaller bonus cards right now, Gesa and Wells Fargo. $200 on $1k spend and $300 on $3k (I think). I did some previous that were $750-!,000 bonus on $7500+ spend
I think it might be tough to get a business card without a business, but I have a business so I get a few. I don't think they are all better, some are, some aren't.
I just had a US Bank card apply the yearly fee (it was waived the first year). I called and asked to change to a different US Bank card that didn't have a fee. I think this is somewhat common, but, again, Doctor of Credit has info on this, too.

The Doctor of Credit website is the best for easily researching credit card deals (and bank bonuses): https://www.doctorofcredit.com/

I don't have a real business, but I fill out business applications as if I will turn my eBay selling into a (not-at-all lucrative) business.  I have only done this with 2 banks - Wells Fargo and Bank of America, and they did not ask additional questions about the business beyond a few basic questions.

I cancel after the annual fee has posted, but before it is due.  I've never had any trouble canceling - they don't care - but I definitely wait a full year.

I don’t know if some of the CC companies have caught onto churning these days.

Some have.  If you intend to get more than a couple of cards, you can read up on all the rules for the various CC companies on DoC.

Definitely wait a year before cancelling.  You have 30 days after fee posts to cancel and get the fee cancelled.  This goes double if it's an Amex card - they will claw back points and  put you on their blacklist.  Those folks don't mess around.

Doctor of Credit is the best source of info and recommendations since he takes no referral fees from credit card companies.

Can anyone recommend me a credit card with a good sign up bonus?  I am about to have a high amount of expenses the next few months and am looking for a credit card I can churn.

Best signup I have gotten in recent years was when Capital One released their Venture X last year. It's still pretty good but it was great last year. I'll preface that with, it's definitely better for a traveler and it's a premium card so it costs $395 a year. The bonus is 75K points (another 10K annually) $100 credit towards TSA/Global entry, $300 travel credit and free Priority Lounge access you may find a better deal but here is the referral link they sent me https://capital.one/3spLFBI if you want to check it out. None premium card I think the Chase cards are pretty good but all of the premium cards will give better benefits which I'd again say are better for travel. If you're not a traveler I'd say look at a cash back card.

Yes I have signed up for business cards and some do have higher rewards BUT read through the benefits carefully as I found out on one of mine that the NON BUSINESS version had a few better benefits on spending levels/bonuses whereas the initial signup was less in the end the non business card would have been more fruitful

I never cancel before the fee. Usually you have 30 days to cancel after the annual fee and you get fully refunded. I keep using the card, wait until 2 or 3 weeks and cancel, pay by outstanding bill in full and have never had an issue. Then it should you had the card for over a year.

I would probably start with the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve, since you have to worry about the 5/24 rule with Chase, and can only get the Sapphire cards every 4 years.

As for business cards, I have gotten many with my sole proprietor "business" info entered.  Amex probably has the highest return with the Platinum and Gold business cards.

I would consult this page whenever you need a new card: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/best-current-credit-card-sign-bonuses/
